Hamburg Honor Scholars

A beautiful city of 2 million people, Hamburg is an international center for law, business, art, and music.

Under the Hamburg Honor Scholars Program, select Notre Dame Law students have the opportunity to enroll tuition-free in one of Bucerius Law School's prestigious summer programs in Hamburg, Germany. Selected students receive stipends for living expenses and financial support for travel costs. Students also have the opportunity to apply for summer positions with ADM's EMEA legal and compliance offices in Hamburg, Germany.

Bucerius Law School was the first private law school in Germany and is widely regarded as the nation's best law school. It draws students from around the world. ADM is an American multinational food processing and commodities trading corporation and has EMEA offices in Hamburg, Germany.

Bucerius Law School was the first private law school in Germany and is widely regarded as the nation's best law school.

In 2024, the Bucerius Summer Programs will run from July 1 through July 19. The programs are taught in English.

Students may choose from three program options:

  • International Business Law
  • Legal Technology and Operations
  • Licensing Transactions in Intellectual Property

Notre Dame Law students may receive up to 5 credits for their participation in one of the summer programs.

Students also have the opportunity to apply for a summer internship with the EMEA legal and compliance offices of ADM, an American multinational food processing and commodities trading corporation with offices in Hamburg, Germany. The internship will run 10-12 weeks, and ADM will assist with securing visas if necessary.

Financial Support

Selected students in the Bucerius summer programs will receive tuition waivers for the summer programs, a $5,000 stipend for living expenses, and up to $1,000 for travel costs.

Students selected to intern at ADM will receive an $8,000 stipend for a full 10-12 week internship and up to $2,100 for travel costs. ADM will also provide housing for the duration of the internship.

How to Apply

All first-year and second-year students at Notre Dame Law School are eligible to apply to the Hamburg Honor Scholars Program.

The application will open December 1 on IrishLink.

Application period: December 1, 2023 - January 12, 2024

Selection will be based on academic achievement and demonstrated interest in international law, as reflected in a personal statement.

Please note that students may apply for both the Bucerius Summer Courses and an internship at ADM, but students may only participate in one of the two opportunities.
