Intellectual Property Clinic

Director: Grace Mills

The Intellectual Property Clinic is a teaching law practice where Notre Dame law students, under the supervision of a licensed attorney, gain experience providing legal services involving patents, copyrights, and trademarks. The Clinic is led by Professor Grace Mills.

If you are innovating, creating, educating, or entertaining, intellectual property – whether yours or another’s – can impact your work. If you are starting a new business, intellectual property can help you build that business. Whatever your work, you may need advice to avoid infringement of another’s intellectual property or to prevent infringement of yours.

The Clinic aims to help each client navigate the intellectual property law that intersects with the client’s work. Some examples of the services the Clinic provides are:

  • Patent counseling

  • Patent procurement

  • Trademark counseling

  • Trademark registration

  • Copyright counseling

  • Copyright licensing

  • Digital Millennium Copyright Act issues

If you are interested in being represented by the Clinic, you may:

  • Submit an application using our Application for Legal Services form. If you would like a paper copy or PDF version of this form, or if you otherwise need assistance, please contact the Clinic at ndipclinic@nd.edu or 574-631-4766.

  • If the Clinic may be able to represent you, we will reach out to conduct an interview and learn more about your need for legal services. Then, you and the Clinic will jointly decide whether the Clinic will represent you and what the scope of that representation will be. If the Clinic is not able to represent you, we will try to provide you with referrals to other providers of legal services.
