Notre Dame Law School has further solidified the international reach of its Global Lawyering Initiative with the recent signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreements with the University of Lucerne and Paris-Panthéon-Assas University. Both partnerships will bolster opportunities for international study, teaching, and research for faculty and students at the Law School.

In March, Notre Dame Law School and the Faculty of Law at the University of Lucerne formalized their long-standing relationship by signing an official partnership agreement. The agreement was signed during the annual University of Lucerne Law and Economics Conference, a collaborative event co-sponsored for many years by the Law School's Research Program on Law and Market Behavior (ND LAMB).

Deans G. Marcus Cole of Notre Dame Law School and Nicolas Diebold of the University of Lucerne's Faculty of Law officiated at the signing. Notre Dame’s work on this agreement was led by Associate Dean for International & Graduate Programs Paul Miller, who attended the signing along with his Lucerne counterpart, Mira Burri, Professor of International Economic and Internet Law and Director for Internationalization.

This renewed partnership with Lucerne aims to facilitate and increase faculty and student exchanges, encourage joint research endeavors, and promote collaborative program initiatives. Notre Dame and Lucerne are committed to enhancing academic cooperation and have plans to organize more joint events in the future, following the success of the previous Law and Economics conferences.

The Faculty of Law at the University of Lucerne is part of the Law School's official exchange program, allowing select J.D. students to study law for a semester abroad and engage in comparative legal studies. This formal partnership will broaden these exchange opportunities.

In a separate ceremony in Paris, Dean Cole and Vice President for International Affairs at Paris-Panthéon-Assas University, Emmanuelle Chevreau, finalized a renewal MOU between the two institutions. Dean Cole was joined in Paris by Associate Dean Miller and Vice President Chevreau was joined by Professor of Law Malik Laazouzi. Associate Dean Miller and Professor Laazouzi were instrumental in the development of the initial MOU and the renewal.

This alliance will extend opportunities for faculty and student exchanges, and develop joint research projects and other collaborative programs.

"Through these strategic partnerships, Notre Dame Law School reaffirms its commitment to fostering global academic excellence and expanding horizons for our faculty and students. These agreements not only strengthen our international reach but also provide invaluable opportunities for collaborative research, faculty exchanges, and shared learning experiences. We are excited about the possibilities these partnerships promise, and look forward to deepening our engagement with the global legal community,” said G. Marcus Cole, the Joseph A. Matson Dean and Professor of Law at Notre Dame Law School.

Associate Dean Miller added, “Panthéon-Assas and Lucerne are exceptional law schools, amongst the best in Europe, and they’ve already proven to be fantastic partners for us. We are excited about deepening our ties with both institutions.”

This is just the beginning of expanded international collaborations. Later this month, Notre Dame Law School and the University of Cape Town in South Africa will sign an official partnership agreement. This past fall, a delegation from Notre Dame Law School visited South Africa and the University of Cape Town to initiate discussions, aiming at establishing a formal faculty and student exchange program and partnership.
