Book Launch & Discussion: ‘No Escape’ by Nury Turkel
Notre Dame Law School’s Religious Liberty Initiative will host a book launch and discussion for Nury Turkel’s No Escape: The True Story of China’s Genocide of the Uyghurs on July 4 in London. The event is scheduled to complement the International Ministerial Conference on Freedom of Religion or Belief, which will be held in London on July 5-6.
No Escape (HarperCollins, 2022) is a powerful memoir that lays bare China’s repression of the Uyghur people.
In the words of Turkel, “Communist China has created an open prison-like environment through the most intrusive surveillance state that the world has ever known while committing genocide and enslaving the Uyghurs on the world’s watch.”
A reception will follow the discussion, and a limited number of books will be available for attendees.

Speakers
Nury Turkel is a Uyghur-American attorney, foreign policy expert, and human rights advocate.
He was born in a re-education camp at the height of China’s tumultuous Cultural Revolution and spent the first several months of his life in detention with his mother. He came to the United States in 1995 as a student and was later granted asylum by the U.S. government. As an attorney, he specializes in regulatory compliance, federal investigation and enforcement, anti-bribery, legislative advocacy, and immigration.
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed him to the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, which he serves as vice chair. In 2020, TIME recognized Commissioner Turkel on its list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.
Lord David Alton will join Commissioner Turkel for the discussion.
Lord Alton was a member of the House of Commons from 1979 to 1997, when he was appointed as an Independent Member of the House of Lords. He is a professor at Liverpool Hope University and formerly a professor of citizenship at Liverpool John Moores University.
Lord Alton is known worldwide for his advocacy in the areas of human rights and religious freedom. In 2019, Ambassador Sam Brownback presented Lord Alton with a U.S. State Department Award for his work on human rights.

Established in 2020, the Notre Dame Law School Religious Liberty Initiative promotes and defends religious freedom for people of all faiths through scholarship, events, and the Law School’s Religious Liberty Clinic. The initiative protects the freedom of individuals to hold religious beliefs as well as their right to exercise and express those beliefs and to live according to them.
The Religious Liberty Initiative has represented individuals and organizations from an array of faith traditions to defend the right to religious worship, to preserve sacred lands from destruction, to promote the freedom to select religious ministers, and to prevent discrimination against religious schools and families.
