“This Is Not Who We Are”: An Update on Detainees at Guantanamo Bay

Brian Foster, NDLS ’07, is a senior litigation associate at Covington & Burling LLP in Washington DC. Since his first day at the firm in 2008 he has represented nearly 20 Guantanamo Bay detainees. He has visited the Guantanamo Bay prison six times, has argued detainee habeas cases in federal district and circuit court, and has been recognized as an authority on Guantanamo in the media and among fellow counsel for detainees. Mr. Foster will provide a brief history of the Guantanamo litigation, an overview of where things stand today and in the near future, and what it all means for the rule of law.
