Stephan F. Wernicke joined the Faculty of Law at Humboldt University Berlin in 2007 as Professor of European Law, European Economic Law, and Competition Law. His teaching and scholarship focus on European law and the legal foundations of the European economic order.
Professor Wernicke brings a distinctly practice-oriented perspective to academic work. His experience includes more than a decade of work with the German Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg and with the Vice President of the European Commission in Brussels.
His institutional roles place him at the intersection of academia, legislation, and business representation. As Chief Legal Officer of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he advises the Federal Government on draft legislation affecting the economy and regularly serves as an expert before the Legal Affairs Committee of the German Bundestag. He is also Vice President of the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation and Chairman of the Board of the Arbitration Court at the German Chamber of Commerce.
Professor Wernicke has published widely in leading German and international law journals and is a co-editor of the European Journal of Economic Law (EuZW). His current research examines contemporary developments in European legal thought.
He studied law in Berlin, Munich, London, and Geneva, was a Visiting Fellow at Columbia Law School, New York, and earned his doctorate from Humboldt University Berlin.
