The Honorable Damon R. Leichty, judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana, received his commission on July 26, 2019 to succeed Judge Robert L. Miller, Jr., for whom Judge Leichty clerked many years before.

Judge Leichty has taught as an adjunct faculty member at Notre Dame Law School since 2017. He teaches product liability—one of his specialties in practice before taking the bench. He also routinely presents on federal practice and procedure. Formerly a partner at Barnes & Thornburg LLP, Judge Leichty represented clients as a trial lawyer in more than 30 federal and state jurisdictions across the United States.

Judge Leichty received his J.D. cum laude from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, his M.Litt. from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, and his A.B. summa cum laude from Wabash College. He is a member of the American Law Institute, and was inducted in the Order of the Barristers.

A recipient of several awards, Judge Leichty tries to honor the generosity of others by giving back to the community through service on several non-profit boards. He is an emeritus board member of the Boys and Girls Club of the Northern Indiana Corridor. He is president of the Ronald A. Leichty Scholarship Foundation, Inc. that awards collegiate scholarships. He has previously served as director on the boards for the Family & Children’s Center, Inc., the Family & Children’s Center Foundation, the Northern Indiana Center for History, and the South Bend Civic Theatre. He is a past president of the Robert A. Grant Inn of Court.
