Brett Cavanaugh is the Transactional Legal Fellow for the Religious Liberty Clinic, where he helps oversee students working with religious nonprofit organizations on various tax, corporate, transactional, employment, and strategic matters.

Prior to joining Notre Dame Law School in 2023, Cavanaugh practiced law in Boston as an associate at Murphy, Hesse, Toomey & Lehane, LLP. Before attending law school, he worked in Catholic education for six years, including as a middle school teacher and university lay chaplain.

Cavanaugh earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees from the University of Notre Dame. He graduated cum laude from Boston College Law School, where he served as president of the St. Thomas More Society and staff writer with the Law and Religion Program. While in law school, he interned for the Honorable Robert H. Cleland on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
