Brett Cavanaugh is the Transactional Legal Fellow for the Lindsay and Matt Moroun Religious Liberty Clinic, where he helps oversee students working with religious nonprofit organizations on various tax, corporate, transactional, employment, and strategic issues.

Prior to joining Notre Dame Law School in 2023, Cavanaugh practiced law at a firm in Boston. As a law student, he interned for the Honorable Robert H. Cleland on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Before attending law school, he worked in Catholic education for six years as a middle school teacher and university chaplain. 

Cavanaugh earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education degrees from the University of Notre Dame. He graduated cum laude from Boston College Law School, where he served as president of the St. Thomas More Society and as a staff writer with the Law and Religion Program. He also earned a certificate in Religion and the Rule of Law from the International Center for Law and Religion Studies' Oxford Program.
