Prior to working at the Clinic, Murphy worked for several years as a litigation associate at Jenner & Block in Chicago. While at Jenner, Murphy maintained an active pro bono practice that focused on representing wrongfully convicted individuals, individuals on death row, and criminal defendants. In 2017, Murphy was part of the team of attorneys that exonerated Patrick Pursley of a murder conviction for which he served 23 years in Illinois prison. Murphy also helped secure post-conviction relief from death row for a client in Texas.

Murphy graduated from the Law School in 2014 summa cum laude and served as the executive editor of the Notre Dame Law Review. After graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Paul J. Kelly Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit before starting at Jenner.

Outside of his work at the Clinic, Murphy is an active member of the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Chicago and served as President of the organization in 2020-2021. Murphy also serves on the Board of Directors for the non-profit Gift of Water, which helps provide clean drinking water to families and communities in Haiti.
