Monday Morning Update
For the week of February 6, 2012
Good morning, NDLS
Happy Super Bowl Monday! I would love to write a quick intro talking about the game, or the commercials, or the goofy assistants who run on the field and squirt water into the players’ mouths. But I got lost in a Wikipedia information binge and missed some pretty substantial chunks of the game. But did you know that in the 17th century there was a French soldier named “Tarrare” who suffered from polyphagia, and ate his own body weight in raw meat every day? That’s way more interesting than watching Eli Manning trying to prove himself to his parents.
So rather than talk about the game, I’ll take this opportunity to publish an open letter. Enjoy.
To the person who stole my copy of the ND Law Review:
When you took a hardcopy of the Notre Dame Law Review from mailbox 145, you might have thought it wouldn’t be a big deal. Maybe you thought I wasn’t planning on reading it. Maybe you thought I wouldn’t notice it was gone. Or maybe you thought I wouldn’t miss it enough to do anything about it. But maybe you were wrong.
Sure, I probably wasn’t going to actually read it, per se. And yes, it had been sitting there undisturbed for at least six months. But it was serving an important purpose as mailbox filler. Without it, ol’ 145 feels empty. Desolate. Devoid of purpose. Every day I walk past it, and see that the only things there are a couple of year-old fliers. My heart sinks into my stomach. And I am forced to bite back tears.
Without that copy of the NDLR, the bookshelf I hope to own at some point in the future will never be truly filled. People will see the missing volume and assume I never finished my three years at Notre Dame Law. And I will have to ask myself: “Without the book, are they really all that wrong?”
Yours was not a victimless crime. I will continue to pray for you, and only hope that you realize the damage your thoughtless pilfering has wrought.
Cordially,
James C. Champlin
Mailbox 145
P.S. I hope you get a really bad papercut when you go to read it.
And now, the News
SBA STUFF
After much deliberation and conflict-checking, the date for Barrister’s Ball is set as March 23rd. More details will be forthcoming, but be ready to put on some formal clothes, have a nice dinner, and act a fool in front of your peers on the dance floor.
The 100 Days of Service will be kicking off this coming Thursday with a fun service event. More details will be forthcoming in an email soon.
I added in a paragraph late and don’t want to mess up my whole “alternating paragraph color scheme.” So here’s a line of filler and a link to something on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXKDu6cdXLI
COAT DRIVE
The Military Law Student Association is organizing a coat drive benefitting the South Bend Center for the Homeless. Bring any and all unwanted winter-wear to the Student Services Office down on the first floor. Rebecca Ward will be accepting donations through the end of March. Email Cassie Fowler at cfowler2@nd.edu with any questions.

Caitlin Shetter and Ryan Raybould, (3Ls) recently competed in the 5th Annual UC Davis Asylum and Refugee Law National Moot Court Competition. Caitlin and Ryan made it to the finals and placed 5th out of 22 teams nationally, earning Notre Dame Law School a plaque and Top-8 placement in the school’s first year participating in the competition. In other words, they nailed it. Great job, guys!

SUNDAY
Bengal Bouts start Sunday with the Preliminaries. Stop by the Joyce Center Fieldhouse starting at 1 p.m. to watch some of your fellow law students get punched in the face while hopefully also punching someone else in the face.
SPIRITUAL SNIPPET
Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. – Philippians 2:3
That’s all I have for you this week. I hope you enjoyed this edition of the MMU. Unless you’re the one who stole my NDLR. Just remember: it’s only a matter of time until I find out who you are and take you down.
Love,
Jimmy
