New York University Professor Joseph Weiler, one of the most distinguished scholars of European law worldwide, will present “Learning From the Teaching(s) of the Trial of Jesus” on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 5 p.m. in the Patrick F. McCartan Courtroom at Notre Dame Law School.
Weiler directs the Tikvah Center for Law and Jewish Civilization at New York University School of Law. He is the author, inter alia, of Un Europa Cristiana (Rizzoli 2003), translated into nine languages.
Weiler’s lecture explores the historical context, the factual matrix, and the legal issues concerning the trial(s) of Jesus by the Jewish and Roman authorities. Professor Gary Anderson, of the Theology Department at Notre Dame, will offer a commentary on the lecture. The event is sponsored by Notre Dame Law School and The Nanovic Institute for European Studies, with additional support from the Notre Dame Theology Department and Notre Dame Campus Ministry.
