Using your travel stipend

Author: Lauren Love

Visiting South Bend and experiencing the beautiful Notre Dame campus is one of the best ways to see the unique qualities of the Law School and determine if we are the best fit for your legal education. To that end, we are happy to provide our admitted students with stipends to assist them in their travels. Here we will offer a few guidelines and suggestions on how best to use your stipend so that your travel experience is as smooth as possible.

The travel stipend may be used to cover expenses related to lodging, flights, rental cars, train or bus tickets, gas, and tolls. All admitted students will receive a travel stipend. Your travel stipend amount is disclosed in your admit packet. Instructions for using the travel stipend are included in your visit confirmation email.

We encourage you to visit either for one of our Admitted Student Weekends (March 24-25 and March 31-April 1) or on a Friday during the spring semester because those days are specially designed for the admitted students. We will do our best accommodate other visit days as necessary. Check out the Law School website for additional information regarding the visit programs. You can RSVP for one of the Admitted Student Weekends or a day visit from that page.

After you visit campus, please submit your travel receipts to the Law School Admissions Office via email to
The documents required for reimbursement are:

Airline travel – Credit card statement indicating the airfare charge and the date of purchase, as well as the flight itinerary indicating your seat number and the date you traveled.*

Hotel – Paid receipt with a zero balance.

Rental car – Paid receipt for the rental car and your credit card statement indicating the rental charge amount.*

Gasoline – Receipt of purchase.

Tolls – Receipts or electronic statement for E-ZPass with the charges highlighted.

*You may black out all but the last four digits of your credit card statement, and other charges not pertaining to your visit.

Just a few other notes:

  • Early- and Regular-Decision admits may use the travel stipend through April 15. Students admitted via the waitlist may use the travel stipend through the deposit deadline stated on their admission letter.
  • You may only use your travel stipend to cover your expenses. We cannot reimburse expenses related to a guest traveling with you.
  • We cannot reimburse you for expenses related to using travel points or award miles.
  • To make sure we can process all travel stipend requests prior to the end of the fiscal year, the deadline for submitting receipts to our office is June 1, 2017.
