Law Schools Reimagine the Boston Massacre Trial in Shamrock Series Event

Notre Dame Law School and Boston College Law School students offered modern versions of the final arguments from the 1770 Boston Massacre Trial. This year marked the 245th anniversary of the trial as well as the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta. The event allowed the two law schools, their students and alumni, to celebrate the trial as an enduring example of the importance of the Rule of Law in America. A.J. Bellia, O’Toole Professor of Constitutional Law at NDLS, gave an overview of the historic events leading to the trial and why it remains an important touchstone. Judge Jack Blakey, ’88, ’92 J.D., of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, explained why the issue of a free society under the Rule of Law is still an issue today. Stephen LaBrecque, an ND grad and Boston College 2L, argued for the prosecution, while Nico Howard, an NDLS 3L, argued for the defense. The Law School sponsored the event as a part of the University’s annual Shamrock Series.
