James Friedman '72 J.D. was appointed by the Wisconsin Supreme Court for a term of four years effective January 1, 2020, as a referee to preside over attorney disciplinary matters under the supervision of the Supreme Court. Friedman, a retired partner of Quarles & Brady LLP, was among 9 former judges and five attorneys appointed as referees throughout the state. Prior to retiring from active practice, he was well-known for his representation of banks in Wisconsin and for his experience in dealing with federal and state bank regulators. His in-depth knowledge of the banking industry and his creative approach to navigating legal issues have resulted in several first-of-a-kind transactions for his bank clients. Friedman is a member and Lifetime Fellow of the Wisconsin Law Foundation. Friedman previously served the Wisconsin Supreme Court and Office of Lawyer Regulation for seven years as a Member and Vice Chair of the Preliminary Review Committee.
