Smith Anderson is pleased to announce that Rosemary Kenyon has been named one of the 2018 North Carolina Super Lawyers. Kenyon practices in the area of employment and labor law counseling and litigation, across a wide variety of industries and companies, both public and private. Kenyon also serves as Chair of the Firm’s Pro Bono Committee.
Nancy O’Connor has been appointed by Catholic University President, John Garvey, as the University’s new general counsel, effective January 1, 2018. O’Connor brings over 41 years of legal experience in the areas of labor and employment, litigation, and research integrity. Prior to her appointment, O’Connor spent 17 years as partner at Bracewell LLP representing clients in the areas of compliance, internal investigations, transactions, and litigation. Butzel Long is pleased to announce that Catherine Karol has joined the firm as Counsel in its Detroit office. Karol concentrates her practice in transactional negotiations, regulatory compliance, mergers and acquisitions, and divestitures. Karol recently retired from a 38-year career on the General Motors (GM) Legal Staff, where she advised all levels of management on a wide range of global legal and business issues. Working with internal leadership, peers, subordinates, outside counsel, and other advisers, Karol developed and implemented strategies for issue resolution and business planning with automotive suppliers, regulators, other OEMs and adversaries. While at GM, she was part of a seasoned executive team that negotiated complex multi-million dollar global transactions and relationships.

It is with a heavy heart that the law school announces the passing of Demetrio “Butch” Verich, who passed away peacefully on April 15, 2017. Following a twenty year career in the Navy, Verich graduated from Notre Dame with a doctorate in Law and master’s in Business Administration. Verich then served for many years as Forest County District Attorney. Please see a beautiful tribute to Verich’s life in the online obituary.
Patrick A. Salvi, managing partner of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard, and his wife, Lindy, have been named recipients of the 2017 Leonardo da Vinci Award of Excellence by the Order Sons of Italy in America, Grand Lodge of IL/WI. The award recognizes Italian Americans in a variety of fields who have become a pride and inspiration to the Italian community. Mr. and Mrs. Salvi were recognized in the field of “Entrepreneurs” for their work with Salvi Sports Enterprises.

Kathleen Cekanski-Farrand retired after serving on the South Bend Common Council for 42 years. Her tenure as Council Attorney is a record in the state of Indiana. She served with six different administrations in South Bend dating back to the 1972-1976 administration up through current administration under Mayor Pete Buttigieg. As the council attorney, Cekanski-Farrand wrote countless resolutions, ordinances, and coordinated various legal documents and happenings regarding Council actions. Read More.
James Cawley, a former member and chairman of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), has joined the Harrisburg law firm SkarlatosZonarich LLC as an energy consultant. Cawley, a retired lawyer, served two terms as a member of the PUC, from 1979 to 1985 and from 2005 to 2015, and was chairman from 2008 to 2011. Cawley was one of the original law clerks for Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Court when it came into existence in 1970, served as majority counsel to the state Senate Consumer Affairs Committee and chief counsel to the Democratic floor leader in the Senate, and was a major drafter of the Pennsylvania Public Utility Code.

Leading Lawyers Magazine has named alumnus and adjunct professor Patrick Salvi as one of the Top 10 Lawyers in Illinois in three separate categories. Salvi was named as one of the Top 10 Leading Lawyers in Illinois in All Areas of Law, Top 10 Leading Consumer Lawyers in Illinois, and Top 10 Personal Injury Plaintiff’s Lawyers in Illinois. Salvi is the managing partner of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard. Additionally, Salvi is an adjunct law professor at Notre Dame Law School.
Karen Bush Schneider was named to Michigan Lawyers Weekly’s 2016 class of Leaders in the Law. Schneider is founding shareholder of White Schneider P.C. in Okemos, Michigan where she is a highly regarded authority in labor law.
The Law School is sad to announce the passing of Mike McGloin on April 27, 2016 in Denver, Colorado. McGloin worked as an Assistant District Attorney and later joined the Denver firm of Arkin & Hanlon in 1973. The firm later became McGloin, Davenport, Severson & Snow and he practiced at that firm until 2013. He then continued to practice with Lindquist & Venom. He was known for his mentoring of younger attorneys and he was especially welcoming to Notre Dame law students. Tomas “Tom” Gamba, a partner with Gamba, Lombana & Herrera in Miami, was awarded the Florida Chapters of the American Board of Trial Advocates Trial Lawyer of the Year Award at FLABOTA’s annual convention. The statewide award is given to a trial lawyer that epitomizes FLABOTA’s commitment to the preservation of the Seventh Amendment and the art of trial lawyering.
The Honorable Nora Barry Fischer, District Court Judge for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania was chosen by the Mediation Council of Western Pennsylvania (MCWP) as the recipient of its 2015 Conflict Resolution Day Award. Judge Fischer was formally recognized with the award on November 18, 2015 during the MCWP’s annual Conflict Resolution Day event. The MCWP selected Judge Fischer for this award due to her dedication to training and mentoring lawyers throughout their legal careers and for serving as a helpful, positive role model to both male and female lawyers, her family and the Pittsburgh community.
Quarles & Brady LLP today announced that Milwaukee partner James D. Friedman has been elected to the Board of Directors for Cristo Rey Jesuit Milwaukee High School. There are 30 Cristo Rey schools nationwide serving 9,800 students. The Milwaukee Cristo Rey facility welcomes its first class this fall. “I’m honored to serve on the board,” said Friedman. “Cristo Rey has a very unique and innovative approach to high school education for economically deprived children.” Friedman is a member of this firm’s Business Law Practice Group. He has provided legal counsel to clients in very challenging legal, financial and business matters for more than 40 years. He handles countless legal matters including business litigation, securities offerings, mergers and acquisitions, banking regulation and corporate governance.
Carol Ann Nix’s first book, DRAGON HEARTS: LOVE IN CHINA, was published in June 2015. It is a memoir containing candid accounts of her life in China from 2009 through 2010. The story contains some of her personal experiences and impressions as a Valparaiso University professor teaching university courses to Chinese undergraduate and graduate students in Beijing. The book is about Chinese hearts touching Carol Ann’s heart, and her heart touching theirs. Her first sequel, DRAGON HEARTS: EAGLE IN CHINA, will be published in December 2015 by Koehlerbooks. She plans to write two additional sequels in her DRAGON HEARTS series.
Miller Canfield is pleased to announce that Christopher Dembowski was honored as a “Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers’ 2016 in the practice area of Public Finance Law. Dembowski has played a key role in establishing many financing programs for various State of Michigan authorities, including the State Building Authority, Michigan Strategic Fund, Michigan Tobacco Settlement Finance Authority and Michigan Finance. He assisted in drafting legislation that either created those authorities or established new programs administered by them. For the Michigan Municipal Bond Authority, Chris has been involved in establishing its School Aid Note Program, Local Government Loan Program, Clean Water Revolving Fund Loan Program, Drinking Water Revolving Fund Loan Program, School Loan Revolving Fund Program and Strategic Water Quality Initiatives Fund Loan Program. Chris also has experience representing cities, villages, townships, municipal authorities and school districts in public finance transactions. Dembowski practices in Miller Canfield’s Lansing, Michigan office.
