Notre Dame Professor of Law Richard Garnett participates in Villanova University School of Law’s third annual John F. Scarpa Conference on Law, Politics, and Culture today, Feb. 19. The conference title is “Liberty of Conscience and Religious Equality.”

Garnett will present “Standing, Spending, and Separation: How the No-Establishment Rule Does (and Does Not) Protect Conscience.” He joins speakers from the law schools at the University of Chicago, New York University, Columbia University, Villanova University, and University of California, Berkeley.

The conference is a response to Martha Nussbaum’s book, “Liberty of Conscience: In Defense of America’s Tradition of Religious Equality.” According to the event program, “In a world of increasing religious conflict, few tasks are more urgent than understanding why those who disagree with us should leave us free in our beliefs.”
