In Memoriam: Judge William H. Baughman, Jr., ‘74 J.D.

It is with a heavy heart that the law school announces the passing of Judge William Baughman in Pepper Pike, Ohio on July 6, 2024 shortly after celebrating his 50th anniversary with his wife. Judge Baughman passed away at the age of 75 after battling an extended illness. Judge Baughman was appointed in 2000 as a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio where he established a tremendous reputation for his judicial acumen, demeanor and integrity in his 22 years of public service. Judge Baughman served as a mentor and helped launch the legal careers for countless men and women (including many Notre Dame graduates) through summer internships and fostering connections with the Cleveland legal community. In 2006, Judge Baughman was instrumental in co-founding the Cleveland Lawyers Alumni Committee –the first Notre Dame lawyer group of its kind and the model for the lawyer committees now serving the eighteen national regions for the Notre Dame Law Association. Additionally, Judge Baughman served for nearly two decades as a visiting faculty member in the law school’s Intensive Trial Advocacy Program. This past spring the Notre Dame Law Association proudly presented Judge Baughman with the Edward Murphy Award in recognition of his remarkable career as a jurist, public servant, and outstanding contributor to the Notre Dame Law School.
