In Memoriam: John Francis Murray, ‘56, ‘58 J.D.

It is with great sadness that the law school announces the passing of John Francis Murray on September 20, 2024 in Woodbridge, Virginia. Upon graduation, Murray received an appointment to serve as a trial lawyer in the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice. He was promoted through the Justice Department to his final rank as Deputy Assistant Attorney General. Among the many awards he received over his career were the Attorney General’s Award from Robert F. Kennedy and the Distinguished Executive Award presented to him by President Ronald Reagan. Upon his retirement from the Department of Justice, Murray became counsel to the Washington, D.C. law firm then known as Groom & Nordberg. Additionally, John and his wife, Nell, were involved in many civic, community and church activities.
