In Memoriam: George N. Tompkins, Jr., ‘56 J.D.

It is with great sadness that the law school announces the passing of George Tompkins, Jr. on April 2, 2025 at the age of 94. For nearly six decades, Tompkins practiced aviation law and represented the interest of airlines in the US and internationally. As a leader in aviation law, he spearheaded many high-profile cases, arguing appeals in state and federal courts throughout the United States and representing airlines and their insurers in over 60 major air disasters throughout the world, including arguing two cases before the United States Supreme Court.. Tompkins was passionate about the law and shared his love of it as an adjunct professor at Leiden University in the Netherlands and in 2001, was named to the board of the International Institute of Air and Space Law. Tompkins dedicated significant time to teaching aviation law and international aviation liability systems in China.
