Rare Book and Special Collections

Use of the Kresge Law Library’s Rare Book and Special Collections material is restricted to the Rare Books Reading Room between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and is subject to approval by the Rare Books Librarian. No request guarantees access. Researchers must contact the Rare Books Librarian at least a week in advance for access.

Because of the physical sensitivity of the materials, any request must include the following information:

  • name and any relevant institutional affiliation
  • specific date, or range of dates, when you would like to visit
  • brief project description outlining the subject and purpose of your research

The Rare Books Librarian will then consult with the researcher to determine what materials are needed and prepare them for access. Access is ordinarily limited to a two-hour period and a maximum of two items at a time. Exceptions can be made as needed after consultation.

Researchers are required to heed all instructions for the handling of materials. Only pencils and laptop computers may be brought into the reading room. Ink pens are strictly prohibited. All other personal belongings, including coats, jackets, hats, purses, bags, and mobile devices must be checked at the circulation desk. All items are subject to examination by library staff upon entering and leaving the Reading Room. Depending on the nature of the materials requested, additional instructions may be given.

Please direct requests and questions to Rare Books Librarian and Law Library Director Thomas Mills.
