Students Invited to Hear Keynote Address on “Fragile Families and Children’s Futures”

Sara McLanahan, the William S. Tod Professor of Sociology and Public Affairs at Princeton University, delivered the keynote address for this year’s annual conference of the Leverhulme Trust at 5:30 p.m. March 27 in Notre Dame Law School’s Patrick F. McCartan Courtroom. Students are invited to attend both the address on “Fragile Families and Children’s Futures” and the reception that follows.

Prof. McLanahan is the founding director of the Bendheim-Thoman Center for Research on Child Wellbeing and a principal investigator of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. She is editor-in-chief of the Future of Children, a journal that makes high-quality research on children’s issues accessible to practitioners and policy makers. Her research interests include family demography, poverty and inequality, and social policy.

Her keynote address is a highlight of the third annual workshop of the “Leverhulme International Network on New Families; New Governance” whose theme this year is “Meanings and Understandings of Family Solidarity and Family Regulation.”

Prof. McLanahan has written five books, including Fathers Under Fire (1998), Social Policies for Children (1996); Growing Up with a Single Parent (1994); Child Support and Child Wellbeing (1994); and Single Mothers and Their Children: A New American Dilemma (1986), and over 100 scholarly articles. McLanahan is a member of the National Academy of Science and a fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science. She is a past president of the Population Association of America and has served on the boards of the American Sociological Association, the Population Association of America and the Institute of Medicine’s Board on Children Youth and Families. She currently serves on the Board of the Russell Sage Foundation.
