Notre Dame Law School Gears Up for 66th Annual Moot Court Showcase Argument

The six law students participating in the 66th Annual Moot Court Competition at Notre Dame Law School have been hard at work finalizing their briefs and preparing for oral arguments.

The group of 3Ls, Thomas McAndrew, Christina Jones, and Susan Esquivel, who will present for the petitioner; and Matthew Enzweiler, Chris DeLillo, and Michael Mikulic, who will present for the respondent, have been dedicating their time preparing for the showcase since the fall.

“We’re delighted to support the hard-working moot court students,” said Christine Venter, the Moot Court appellate advisor and director of the legal writing program. “It’s extremely rewarding to see these talented students go on to excel at law school and in their careers as attorneys.”

This year, the Moot Court competition takes up Gerrard Leomund v. United States of America. The case focuses on Leomund, who worked for the Centers for Disease Control studying infectious diseases, and was charged with violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

The Moot Court Competition is sponsored by the Law School’s Moot Court Board. Established in 1950, the Moot Court program provides an opportunity for students to develop their appellate advocacy skills, Venter said.

The showcase will take place on Thursday, Feb. 25 at 5:10 p.m. in the Patrick F. McCartan Courtroom. A reception will follow in the South Reading Room.

Presiding over the final arguments and choosing the winner of the competition will be Matthew G. Durrant, Chief Justice of the Utah Supreme Court, Judge Alice M. Bathelder, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and Chief Magistrate Judge Maureen Kelly, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.
