Larry Ward, a partner at Dorsey & Whitney, LLP in Seattle, specializing in U.S. National Security Law, has been appointed to a two-year term on the Defense Trade Advisory Group (DTAG) that advises the U.S. State Department on defense trade matters. The DTAG provides the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs with a formal channel for regular consultation and coordination with U.S. private sector defense exporters and defense trade specialists on issues involving U.S. laws, policies, and regulations for munitions exports.
Brad Sobolewski, a litigator at Ulmer & Berne LLP in Cleveland, has been promoted to counsel and has been named to the list of Ohio Super Lawyers Rising Stars. Sobolewski has extensive experience in complex litigation matters. He represents clients in state and federal courts throughout the U.S., defending companies in complex commercial, banking, insurance, consumer class action, trade secret and non-compete, product liability, and mass tort litigation.

Brian Skaret, ’02 J.D., has been awarded the Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award for the successful investigation and prosecution of the Barrio Azteca criminal organization earlier this year. This prestigious award is the second-highest conferred by the U.S. Attorney General.
A brief written by Johnathan Bridges, a partner with Susman Godfrey, has been praised as among the “best ever” in the newly released edition of a highly regarded book on legal writing. In The Winning Brief (Third Edition, 2014), respected legal writing expert Bryan A. Garner highlights the brief written by Bridges in Maria Antonieta Martinez-Aguero v. Humberto Gonzalez submitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit. The brief addressed the question of whether the protections offered by the U.S. Constitution’s Fourth and Fifth Amendments applied to a nonresident alien attacked on U.S. soil by an INS agent.
Cynthia Cordes recently received a 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award from her alma mater Boston University’s College of Communications. The award was presented to Cordes for career achievements at a ceremony on campus in Boston during alumni weekend. Cordes was selected by Boston University President, Robert Brown, for a position on the newly launched Women’s Leadership Coalition and participated in the inaugural event , “The President’s Panel: A Conversation with BU Women.” Cordes was also invited to serve as a featured speaker at the College of Communication 100 year anniversary celebration where Cordes spoke on the role of the media in the law.
Cynthia Phillips-Cordes, a partner with Husch Blackwell, has been named to Benchmark Litigation’s Top 250 Women in Litigation. Cordes is one of only five women in the state of Missouri recognized for this honor. Additionally, Cordes was the recipient of the Missouri Bar Pro Bono Publico Award, presented annually to four attorneys who have rendered outstanding pro bono service to indigent or low income persons in need of legal assistance. Cordes is a nationally recognized former federal prosecutor and leader in complex criminal litigation. During her years with the U.S. Department of Justice, Cordes spearheaded and led a multiagency task force of more than 20 federal and state law enforcement agencies and 60 non-profits. Today, Cordes represents clients under criminal and civil investigation by the federal and state governments and leads internal investigations and government compliance for companies. Cordes is a member of the firm’s Technology, Manufacturing & Transportation team and also leads the firm’s Human Trafficking Pro Bono Legal Clinic.
Francisco Valenzuela, of Fanning Harper Martinson Brandt & Kutchin, P.C., has been selected to the Texas Rising Stars list for the 5th consecutive year. The Texas Rising Stars recognizes the state’s best lawyers under the age of 40 and those practicing law under 10 years. Valenzuela was selected based upon his expertise in employment litigation defense, school and education law, and state, local and municipal work.

John R. Linzer has joined the firm of Quarles & Brady LLP, as an associate in the Intellectual Property Practice Group of its Chicago office. Prior to joining Quarles & Brady, Linzer was an attorney at Beem Patent Law Firm in Chicago. His practice focuses on patent counseling, prosecution, litigation, and post-grant proceedings. Linzer’s counseling and prosecution experience involves working with inventors and corporate counsel, beginning at the earliest stages of the patent process. Linzer has tried cases at both the Federal district and appellate levels as well as participated in proceedings before the International Trade Commission.
Cordell Carter was recently appointed Chief of Staff & Director of the Office of the President – United States Programs, for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Matthew Nelson, a partner with Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, is a contributor to the new Michigan Appellate Handbook. As co-chair of the firm’s Appellate Practice Group, Matthew contributed to a chapter entitled “Appellate Briefs”.
John Huang has been recognized as an “Up and Coming” lawyer by Indiana Lawyer in its 2014 Leadership in Law program. John is an associate in the Litigation Group of Bose McKinney & Evans, LLP where he represents clients in commercial, education and Constitutional litigation matters.
Peter Breen successfully defeated a six-term incumbent state representative in the 2014 Republican primary for Illinois’ 48th House District, which covers parts of the western suburbs of Chicago. Breen won the election by 14 percentage points, 57-43, with almost one million dollars being spent on the race between the candidates and outside groups. Breen is currently unopposed in the general election.

Justin O. Kay has been named partner at law firm Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP. Kay is a litigator in the firm’s Chicago office. Justin’s practice focuses primarily on defending corporations and individuals in state and federal court and before federal agencies in cases involving consumer protection statutes, securities laws, and corporate governance statutes. Justin also has a broad array of experience involving general litigation and client counseling, including antitrust compliance; appellate litigation; general business and contract disputes; qui tam defense; insurance coverage defense; personal injury defense; and mediations, arbitrations, and administrative actions before the Federal Communications Commission.
Joseph P. Reid has joined Perkins Coie, San Diego office, as partner in the firm’s Patent Litigation practice. Reid has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in district courts nationwide, as well as the ITC and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He has extensive experience in multi-defendant cases and cases involving industry standards. Reid has worked on dozens of cases, including ten that culminated in a jury or bench trial. Of particular note, he had a significant role in defending Microsoft Corporation against Lucent Technologies and the Multimedia Patent Trust in a series of trials that forged new damages law and were named among the “Top 10 Litigation Wins of 2008” by IP Law and Business.

Luke is a member of the Insurance Recovery Group and has experience litigating, arbitrating, and settling numerous types of insurance, captive insurance, and reinsurance disputes. This includes coverage for environmental pollution and contamination claims; products liability litigation; liabilities faced by pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and healthcare organizations; claims against churches and other religious organizations; civil rights cases and other municipal or governmental liabilities; fidelity and crime losses; claims arising from complex financial and real estate transactions; and first-party property losses.
