Brigadier General James Smith passed away on September 29, 2014 from cancer complications at the age of 54. Jim was married to Jennifer O’Leary Smith, ’89 J.D. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, as a Brigadier General, Jim was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by the President of the United States. Jim was a partner in the firm of Butler Pappas in Chicago. Please view the online obituary for more about Jim’s many accomplishments. In The Winning Brief (Third Edition, 2014), respected legal writing expert Bryan A. Garner highlights the brief written by Bridges in Maria Antonieta Martinez-Aguero v. Humberto Gonzalez submitted to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit. The brief addressed the question of whether the protections offered by the U.S. Constitution’s Fourth and Fifth Amendments applied to a nonresident alien attacked on U.S. soil by an INS agent.
