The law school is sad to announce the death of alumnus Paul E. Heltzel who passed away on June 30, 2014 at his home in Ohio. Heltzel was serving as Trumbull County Commissioner at the time of his death. Read the obituary which gives more detail about his dedication as a public servant and a tribute article.
Dennis G. Collins has been recognized by Chambers USA 2014: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business as a top attorney in the practice area of labor and employment law. Collins is a partner in the law firm Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, P.C. in St. Louis, Missouri.
John R. Linzer has joined the firm of Quarles & Brady LLP, as an associate in the Intellectual Property Practice Group of its Chicago office. Prior to joining Quarles & Brady, Linzer was an attorney at Beem Patent Law Firm in Chicago. His practice focuses on patent counseling, prosecution, litigation, and post-grant proceedings. Linzer’s counseling and prosecution experience involves working with inventors and corporate counsel, beginning at the earliest stages of the patent process. Linzer has tried cases at both the Federal district and appellate levels as well as participated in proceedings before the International Trade Commission.
David J. Butler had been named managing partner of Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP in its Columbus, Ohio office, becoming one of its youngest leaders at age 42. Butler, a litigator, joined Chester Willcox & Saxbe in 1997 and served on its executive committee and as chair of the litigation practice. In 2012, Chester Willcox & Saxbe merged with Taft. Butler will continue in his role as co-chair of the litigation department. Butler serves as president of the Federal Bar Association’s Columbus Chapter. See press release
D. Linden Barber is moving with Quarles & Brady, LLP, from its Washington, D.C. location to its new office recently opened in Indianapolis, Indiana. Barber, Quarles Director of DEA Compliance and Litigation Practice Group, will serve as the office managing partner in Indianapolis. Barber advises manufacturers and distributors of pharmaceutical controlled substances as well as pharmacies, hospitals and other DEA registrants. Prior to joining Quarles & Brady, Barber served for 12 years in a variety of positions at the DEA.
Lorelie Masters has been elected president of the American College of Coverage and Extracontractual Counsel (ACCEC). Masters is a partner in Perkins Coie’s Insurance Recovery Group. Masters will serve as ACCEC’s second president after being one of the founding members of the College established in 2012. Masters practices as an insurance litigator and counselor and has more than 30 years of experience representing policyholders.
Domenique Camacho Moran was recently inducted into the “Women in Business” Hall of Fame at the 12th Annual “Top Women in Business” event hosted by The Queens Courier. Ms. Moran is an employment law partner in the firm of Farrell Fritz, P.C. in New York.
Richard A. Nussbaum II ’74, ’77 J.D. received the Rev. Edward Frederick Sorin, C.S.C., Award from the Notre Dame Alumni Association at Reunion. The award is presented annually to a Notre Dame graduate who has rendered distinguished service to the University.
Kate E. Maternowski, ’12 J.D., was named Pro Bono Attorney of the Year for 2013 by Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren S.C. in Milwaukee.

Timothy Howard has been reappointed to the Construction Law Section Council and appointed to the Senior Lawyers Section Council within the Illinois Bar Association for the 2014-2015 term.
Washington state Governor Jay Inslee appointed Judge Mary Yu to the Washington state Supreme Court.
The law school is sad to announce the death of Stan Cardenas who passed away on April 20, 2014 in San Francisco. Stan was a dedicated alumnus of Notre Dame who served as a Member of the Hesburgh Libraries Advisory Council since 1989. Stan was devoted to helping maintain state of the art library resources on the campus of Notre Dame. Peter Breen successfully defeated a six-term incumbent state representative in the 2014 Republican primary for Illinois’ 48th House District, which covers parts of the western suburbs of Chicago. Breen won the election by 14 percentage points, 57-43, with almost one million dollars being spent on the race between the candidates and outside groups. Breen is currently unopposed in the general election.
