The Hon. Richard A. Posner and Yale Professor Roberta Romano To Speak at NDLS
The Notre Dame Law & Economics Program is presenting a symposium on “Markets & Regulation in the 21st Century” with featured guests Professor Roberta Romano (Yale Law School) and Judge Richard A. Posner (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit; University of Chicago Law School).
The Friday, April 20th program will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Eck Hall 1130 when Professor Romano will present her paper, “For Diversity in the International Regulation of Financial Institutions: Rethinking the Basel Architecture.” Then, at 3:30 p.m., Judge Posner will present “The Nirvana Fallacy Revisited,” an idea related to Chapter 10 of his recent book, The Crisis of Capitalist Democracy (2010), on “The Crisis of Macroeconomics.”
Consistent with its interdisciplinary emphasis, the symposium also will feature faculty commentators from three Notre Dame departments: law, economics, and business. Dr. Thomas Cosimano, Professor of Finance at the Mendoza School of Business, will respond to Professor Romano’s paper on international financial regulation. Dr. Joseph Kaboski, the David F. and Erin M. Seng Foundation Associate Professor in the Department of Economics, and Dr. Avishalom Tor, Professor of Law at Notre Dame Law School, will both respond to Judge Posner’s presentation on the Nirvana Fallacy. In addition, faculty and students in law, economics, and other disciplines are expected to attend and participate.
About the Speakers
Professor Roberta Romano is the Sterling Professor of Law and Director of the Center for the Study of Corporate Law at Yale Law School Her research has focused on state competition for corporate charters, the political economy of takeover regulation, shareholder litigation, institutional investor activism in corporate governance, and the regulation of securities markets and financial instruments and institutions. Romano is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and European Corporate Governance Institute, a research associate of the National Bureau for Economic Research, a past President of the American Law and Economics Association and the Society for Empirical Legal Studies, and a past editor of the Journal of Law, Economics and Organization.
Judge Richard A. Posner is a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and a senior lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School. He has written numerous books on a wide range of subjects, including the economic analysis of law, antitrust law, capitalism and the financial crisis of 2008, catastrophe and intelligence reform, jurisprudence and legal theory. Posner is a founding editor of the Journal of Legal Studies and the American Law and Economics Review, a past President of the American Law and Economics Association, and the inaugural recipient of the Ronald H. Coase Medal from the American Law and Economics Association in 2010.
