Margaret M. Foran has been elected to the Occidental Petroleum Corporation’s Board of Directors. A Double Domer who earned both her B.A. (Magna Cum Laude) and J.D. degrees from Notre Dame, Ms. Foran is Chief Governance Officer, Vice President and Corporate Secretary of Prudential Financial, Inc. Prior to joining Prudential, she was Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Sara Lee Corporation; Senior Vice President, Associate General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Pfizer Inc.; and Vice President and Assistant General Counsel at J.P. Morgan & Co.

When profiled by Diversity and the Bar magazine upon her 2008 move from Pfizer to Sara Lee, Ms. Foran noted that she was initially drawn to the law by a sense of justice—she said she believed in leveling the playing field for society’s more vulnerable members. “I never envisioned myself winding up at Fortune 500 companies,” she told the magazine. But as a student at Notre Dame she was unexpectedly entranced by a corporation law class. Tax and securities, she said, also fascinated her.

Ms. Foran is also former Director of The MONY Group Inc. and MONY Life Insurance Company. She served as Co-Chair and a Director of the Council of Institutional Investors (CII) and is the current Co-Chair of the CII International Corporate Governance Committee.
