Where can I get help with my computer questions?

If you are in the computer lab, you can have your immediate questions answered by the Computer Lab Assistant, who is located in the center of the main lab. You can also check with Student Computing Consultant in Room 205-G Law School. If you are located in the third floor training lab, you can use the campus phone to call the Student Computing Consultant’s office at 1-9793. We try to have an open-door policy. If you are having any problems in the lab, we want to solve them as soon as possible. If you are at your campus residence, you can also contact the Office of Information Technology’s Help Desk at 631-8111, or access their web page at http://www.nd.edu/%7Endoit/helpdesk/.

Can I get my computer serviced?

If your notebook computer is not working properly, the Law School Technology Department will try to address your basic configuration needs as time allows. Bring your computer to Student Computing Consultant’s office, Room 205G Law School, to see if we will be able to help solve your problem. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to fix your hardware problems or some configuration issues. In those instances where we can not fix your problem, you can try the Solutions Center Service Department http://oit.nd.edu/support/service/index.shtml Check the OIT website to find their labor rates.

What is the number to dial-in to Notre Dame via modem?

Notre Dame’s modem pool number is 574-631-4792.

How do I change my password?

You can (and should) change your password online by going to https://password.nd.edu/change.aspx. You will need to enter your NetID and current password before you can choose a new password.

Would it be possible to get a CALI password?

The CALI Library of Lessons is a collection of over 400 interactive, computer-based lessons covering 28 legal education subject areas. Access to CALI lessons requires registration-which is free for Notre Dame faculty, staff and students-and the use of an authorization code. The authorization code is available from Warren Rees in the Research Department of Kresge Library.

You will need to register on the CALI site and enter the Notre Dame authorization code. During the registration process you will also create your own password. In subsequent visits to use lessons, you will only need to enter your email address and your password.

To register go to CALI’s new homepage (www.cali.org) and click on the ‘Not a registered user yet?’ link.

Computer Lab

Who may use the lab computers?

Both computer labs in the Law Building are reserved for law students. Other students may use the cluster labs located on campus. See http://oit.nd.edu/support/service/index.shtml for the hours and locations of those cluster labs.

When is the computer lab open?

The computer labs are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. After 5pm, law students will need to use their campus IDs to access the building.

When is the computer lab staffed?

Computer Lab Assistants are available to assist you during the following times while classes are in session:
Sun: 6pm -11pm
Mon-Thurs: 8am – 11pm
Fri: 8am – 6pm

Where is the lab located?

The main Computing Room is located on the 2nd floor of the Law School, in the middle of the Kresge Library. See a floor plan of the second floor. The Instructional Lab is located on the 3rd floor of the Law School, near the offices of the Center for Civil and Human Rights. The lab is used as a facility for group instruction on electronic resources. When group training is not going on, these computers may be used as an extension of the second-floor Computing Room. See a floor plan of the third floor.

Additionally, there are several computing clusters located around campus, including the facilities at DeBartolo, Hesburgh, and the LaFortune Student Center. Please see http://oit.nd.edu/clusters_classrooms/cluster_information.shtml for the hours and locations of each cluster. There is no charge for using the computing clusters, although the other centers do charge 10 cents per page for printing.

What software is available?

Workstations provide access to the latest editions of Corel Suite (including WordPerfect), Microsoft Office (including MS Word), Internet browsers, and common productivity products. Microsoft Word and various Internet applications are loaded on the Macs.

Is there any charge to print?

As of this time, the Law School is not charging law students to print, but we ask that students conserve resources when at all possible. The Law School will charge the accounts of undergraduate and other graduate students for any printing they use in the Law School.

How does the printing service work?

The Law Library uses Pharos for your printing needs. Print release stations are located next to each of the three lab printers (two in the main second-floor Computing Room and one in the third-floor Instructional Lab). All three printers are part of the same print queue. You therefore control where your document prints by logging in and releasing the print job at the release station closest to the desired printer. Below are instructions for releasing your print job, which you will also find on a green card next to each station’s keyboard.

1. Press any key at the Release Station to begin logging in.
2. Enter your NetID and password.
3. Click on the Job Name you want to print. You can see the length of the document at the bottom of the screen.
4. Click on the Print button. The printer will immediately spool your job.
5. Click on the Exit button when you are finished. If you do nothing, Pharos will log you out after 15 seconds.

If one printer is too busy, choose a different release station to have its attached printer print your document. If all three printers are busy and you have to go to class, you can return to the release stations after your class and print your document then. If you do not print a document within 24 hours, Pharos will delete the document from the print queue.

Although you will have a balance of up to $100.00, we do not charge for printing in the Law School. The balance is available to you to use at the computer clusters on campus. Even though the Law School does not charge for printing, you will not receive the monetary balance at the end of the semester.

How do I log in to a lab computer?

If you are sitting at a computer in either of the Law School’s Labs, press Ctrl + Alt + Del at the same time. Enter your NetID for the username. This is case sensitive, so do not use capital letters. Enter your password. Again, this is case sensitive.

How long may I remain logged into a computer?

Since the computer labs are open 24 hours a day, You are allowed to work at a computer for as long as you would like. However, we only have a limited number of computers for law students to use. So while the lab is crowded, the computer consultants reserve the right to log you off a computer if you are gone for more than 15 minutes.

May I lock my workstation?

You should never lock your workstation. Some people lock their computers for security purposes. If you do, a computer administrator will log you off. Since we do not have access to your password, you will lose any unsaved material. If you are going to be away from your computer for a period of time, please log off.

May I store my files on lab computers?

You should not save your files directly onto a lab computer’s hard drive. You should instead save your files in your network space, which is commonly known as the N drive. There are several advantages of using the N drive. The Office of Information Technologies makes a backup of all your files on the N drive every night. If you accidentally lose a file, you might be able to recover it. You can also access your N drive from the Internet.

Can my data be restored?

If you mistakenly delete a copy of a file on your N drive, you might be able to recover some or all of the information. Every night, the University takes a snapshot of the documents on your N drive (aka NetFile). These backups are created at about 2am every morning, so if you typed a document at 8am and then deleted it at 8pm on the same day, the document cannot be retrieved. Below are instructions for accessing backup files using WebFile.

1. Login to WebFile https://webfile.nd.edu/ with your NetID and password.
2. Go to the Choose View drop-down menu near the top-left of the screen and select NetFile Home.
3. Click the To My Backup button near the top-right of the screen.
4. The folder/file listing will now display a list of nightly snapshots of your NetFile space for the past eight days. The folder sv_nightly.0 displays the backup taken last night; the folder sv_nightly.1 displays the backup taken the night before last; etc.
5. Within a backup folder, you can copy any files or folders you need and paste them into your current NetFile space in WebFile in order to use them. (Files that are accessible in WebFile are available through the N drive as well.)

You can also place a check in the box next to a particular folder or file and click the Restore link near the top of the screen. It will place a copy of the backup folder or file in its original folder within your current NetFile space. (For example, if you restore your Private/myfiles folder from last night, the restore will be placed in NetFile Home/Private/myfiles/Restore.)

To access NetFile backups older than 8 days, please send a request to the OIT Help Desk specifying the exact date that you need to restore.

How do I access my N drive over the Internet?

As long as you have access to the Internet and a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, you can open and save files to your N drive (aka NetFile). In order to do so, you must use WebFile. To access your files on WebFile, use the following procedure.

1. Login to WebFile https://webfile.nd.edu/ with your NetID and password.
2. Go to the Choose View drop-down menu near the top-left of the screen and select NetFile Home.
3. Click on individual folders until you find the file or folder you are looking for.
4. Put a check in the box next to the file.
5. Click the Download link near the top of the page.
6. Choose Save the file, and select a location on your local computer to save it. Folders are downloaded in compressed (.zip) format.
7. Now you can edit or manipulate the file on your own computer. If you downloaded a folder, you will need to uncompress the zip file you downloaded before editing any files within the folder.
8. To save a file on your N drive, you must upload the file into NetFile. Within WebFile, browse to the folder in which you want to save the document.
9. Click the Upload button near the top of the screen.
10. Use the Browse buttons to select the files on your local computer that you want to upload to WebFile.
11. Click the Upload button near the bottom of the page to put the files in your NetFile space and onto your N drive.

You can also download a more complete set of instructions from the OIT at http://oit.nd.edu/shared_file_space/documents/webfile-standardhtml.pdf

How do I check to see how much space I have left in my NetFile network space?

Students have a quota of 500 MB within NetFile to use as you wish. To check your NetFile quota:

1. Login to WebFile https://webfile.nd.edu/ with your NetID and password.
2. Go to the Choose View drop-down menu near the top-left of the screen and select NetFile Home.
3. Your usage information is displayed near the top of the page. For example:
NetFile Home: jstudent Used: 485M
This student currently has only 15 MB of space available on the N drive.

How do I check to see how much space I have left in my Notre Dame IMAP mailbox?

The new email service will implement a “soft” IMAP quota. When users exceed their “soft quotas”, they will have a 14 day grace period in order to delete or archive messages. Students will have a soft quota limit of 50 MB, with a hard quota limit of 250 MB.

A reminder message will be sent to the user every day while they are over the soft quota limit, and they will still continue to receive email. After the 14 day grace period, if the user still exceeds their soft quota, all incoming email will be rejected until they delete or archive enough messages to get below their quota again. If a user reaches the hard quota limit prior to the 14 day grace period expiring, messages will be rejected until they are back beneath the soft quota limit.

To check your IMAP quota, please login to Webmail https://webmail.nd.edu/. The quota is displayed as a bar graph in the upper right corner of the Inbox display.

If I’m graduating, how long will I be able to access my Notre Dame accounts?

Student accounts remain active and accessible until shortly after the start of the next regular academic semester (Fall or Spring). At that time, any student record that is no longer active will be marked for potential deletion. An email will be sent in advance advising of the deletion date, and you will have ample time to respond if your account has been marked in error. When the accounts are removed, you will no longer be able to receive email through your Notre Dame address and the data on your NetFile space will no longer be accessible.

Can I get my NetFile space burned onto a CD?

At the end of your third year, you can have all the files on your N drive copied onto a CD one time for no charge. Please see Student Computing Consultant in Room 205-G if you are interested.

Can I scan personal photographs or papers?

An HP scanner is available in the main computer lab. If you have lost a file from your computer, but you still have a printed copy, you can scan the file into your NetFile space or onto a USB flash drive. You would then be able to continue working with the document. You can also scan images, and then edit the image using a program such as PhotoShop.
