Student Spotlight: Yi Fang '11
Born and raised in the ancient and dynamic city of Beijing and straight out of college from Beida, I embarked on a journey over the Pacific a year ago to pursue my legal education at Notre Dame Law School. Challenging as it may sound, my 1L year turned out to be the most pleasantly rewarding year in my life so far. As I struggled my way through cultural adjustments and casebooks written and lectures given in my second language, I was constantly reassured that I made the right decision by coming to Notre Dame.
Like many of my classmates, I chose Notre Dame Law School not only for its excellent academic programs that have educated generations of great American lawyers, but more importantly for its collegial atmosphere and familial community. Professors carefully learned my name before class, reached out to me when I felt distressed over course work, enthusiastically encouraged me to carry out my academic and social endeavors, and even frequently invited me to their family events. My classmates crushed—from day one—the scary law school myths of win-or-lose competition and study-or-die lifestyle. First-years formed study groups led by upper class mentors, and everyone makes time for fun in addition to the work.
I have also had many opportunities to get involved in the broader University community as well. I participated in various Campus Ministry activities as well as multicultural student programs and alumni social events in Beijing, Chicago, and New York. By participating in these events, I gradually learned my unique and important role as a non-religious international student in this mostly Catholic community. I have also made invaluable connections with NDLS alumni from young associates and public interest practitioners to state Supreme Court justices and multinational law firm partners.
This coming year, I will work as an assistant rector for the largest women’s residence hall on campus, which I believe will be another special way to contribute to the Notre Dame community. I look forward to the next two years in the United States and my lifetime as a member of the Notre Dame family.
