Student Spotlight: Will Burroughs ’10
Bengal Bouts Heavyweight Champ
“When I decided to pursue my legal education at Notre Dame Law School, I knew that I would take advantage of the intramural activities available to graduate students as a way to break up the time spent in classes and at the library. Athletics have always been important to me, and I wanted to continue to integrate sports into my life.
“Now a 3L, I have participated in everything from Notre Dame’s Rugby Club to intramural sports including flag football, basketball, softball, and broomball. But it’s the Bengal Bouts—a boxing competition—which has left an indelible mark on my time here at NDLS. Started by former Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne in 1920, the Bouts raise money for the Holy Cross Missions in Bangladesh. While I enjoy boxing, I also appreciate that it is a way to make a difference in other people’s lives. This University does a great job of combining academics, service, and athletics.
“Throughout the Bouts training, which starts in October and ends with the competition in late February, my classmates and professors are extremely supportive, and the majority of them come to the Bouts to support all of the law school boxers who participate.
Editor’s Note: Burroughs is a two-time heavyweight champ, and is going for his third consecutive title this time around.
“In addition to my athletic pursuits, I have also served as a member of “The Journal of Law, Ethics & Public Policy” and participated on the Competitive Mock Trial Team.
“My involvement in so many things outside the classroom has taught me greater discipline and balance. My first summer internship was with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago, and this past summer I interned with Judge P. Kevin Castel in the Southern District of New York. Following graduation, I will join the Navy JAG Corps.”
