Student Spotlight: Shelby Lile '11

Shelby Lile story In one sense, law school is a channel – it is the route one must take to become an attorney and pursue any professional goals in the legal field. In another sense, though, law school is a destination in itself. Being a destination in its own right makes the choice of a law school vitally important. While three years will feel like an eternity if you are unhappy, it will pass by much too quickly if you find the perfect fit, as I have found at Notre Dame.

After extensive research, I knew exactly where I wanted to go and applied to only two law schools. When I was accepted to Notre Dame, I was elated! The facts I read about the school led me to believe it would be the right destination, but now that my first year is over, I know the intangible qualities of this school are what make it unique and inspire so much devotion in its alumni. Instead of finding the stereotypical cutthroat atmosphere, I have encountered an environment of supportive classmates. Study groups abound, and if sickness (or an overabundance of snow) forces you to miss class, anyone would readily help you catch up.

Not only was I surprised by everyone’s friendliness, but I was amazed by their passion. NDLS obviously sets a high intellectual standard for admittance, but it also strives to create a class full of interesting people. I continue to be astonished as I learn more about the backgrounds and accomplishments of my classmates.

The achievements of our professors cannot be overlooked, either. Although they have intimidating résumés, they are readily accessible to those of us just starting out. They encourage us to visit their offices with questions, or even to discuss future career plans or current events. These positive interactions have continued this summer as I work as a research assistant for Professor Julian Velasco. As he writes a forthcoming article about fiduciary duties, he has taken the time to talk about the applicability of his research to recent headlines and provide beneficial feedback about my work. Besides gaining valuable research and writing experience, I have found corporate law to be an interesting, dynamic topic.

As much as I enjoy my work, I have also enjoyed spending the summer on campus. Countless activities can be found without leaving school, from visiting the art museum to hitting golf balls on the putting green or simply taking in the beautiful flowers and architecture. Students here are incredibly active, and I have never yet gone for a run without seeing a few other runners along the way. Many races take place on campus, lessons in everything from tennis to sailing are offered, and intramural and law school leagues are available for most sports. For those more interested in watching sports than participating, the university’s teams are routinely at the top of the conference. During the school year, several home events occur each week that are free to students. Of course, the most popular sport by far is football!

Football games bring together the entire student body and highlight our devotion to Our Lady’s University. This devotion runs deep, and extends long after the crowds disperse and the cheers fade away. I am proud to attend Notre Dame Law School, and will be proud to join the ranks of devoted alumni upon graduation!
