Student Spotlight: Michael Bergerson '10
The 17th Chief Justice of the United States, John G. Roberts, told me, “Remember your roots.” During a visit to his chambers in late 2006, we discussed not only a shared passion for public service but also our shared alma mater, Notre Dame Grade School in Michigan City, Indiana.
The Chief Justice’s advice struck a chord – “Remember your roots.” Since graduation in 2004 from DePauw University up to that point, I had lived on the west coast, where I managed the election campaign of a Washington state representative, and the east coast, where I was then serving as legislative aide to Indiana Congressman Pete Visclosky. His message connected the lessons of my many political mentors – including Congressman Visclosky and South Bend Congressman Joe Donnelly, both proud Irish Law alums. Each has a passion for improving the quality of life in Indiana and encouraged me to do the same, whether as a lawyer or legislator.
Chief Justice Roberts’ advice also brought into focus a dream which to that point had eluded me. After growing up 30 minutes from South Bend, I remained a diehard Irish fan, yet acceptance as a student had proved more difficult than anticipated.
I began law school instead in Chicago, where I excelled academically and gained valuable experience in politics. While I enjoyed Chicago, something about law school felt incomplete. At my fiancée’s urging, I decided to give Notre Dame one last try.
I have now been a proud domer for a full year. My NDLS experience may be unconventional but certainly has not been limited by my transfer. I was welcomed from day one. I competed on the Moot Court Appellate team and will represent Notre Dame at the upcoming national competition. I joined the ND Energy Center’s student advisory board to improve the University’s environmental impact. Through the SBA, I now serve as transfer liaison to help new transfers fully appreciate their ND experience. Finally, as a 2L, I participated in on-campus interviews and accepted a summer position with a top national firm based in Chicago. Notre Dame has unquestionably improved my ability to compete for employment, even in today’s difficult economy.
Notre Dame has also allowed me to reconnect with my Indiana roots while enjoying a world-class education. With the dream of attending the University now fulfilled, my aspirations to contribute meaningfully to my community have only grown. My Notre Dame education will surely help.
