Why should I participate in L-STAR?
STUDENTS:The money raised makes it possible for your fellow students to provide a variety of legal services to non-profit and government agencies across the country. You are not required, or even expected, to participate in L-STAR for every callback interview, but simply those for which it is most convenient for you.
FIRMS: L-STAR allows you to demonstrate support for Notre Dame Law School students and public interest law.
Who can participate in L-STAR?
Any student going on a callback interview (at a participating firm) whose family or friends can provide a place to stay for the night or a ride to and from the airport in the destination city.
Where do I get L-STAR forms?
Pick up hard copies in the Career Services Office (Room 135) or download the L-STAR form.
What if I’m not interviewing with an OCI firm?
Use L-STAR anyway! Even if you’re interviewing with a small firm or a firm that does not come to campus, many firms would be willing to participate. Just decline the hotel room and submit the L-STAR form with your receipts. If the firm has questions, direct them to this website or the Assistant Director for Public Interest.
Do I have to ask about L-STAR when I schedule my interview?
No, simply decline the hotel accommodations and submit an L-STAR form with your receipts for reimbursement. We’ll do the rest. Feel free to bring up L-STAR at any time though – the publicity always helps!
But do I have to mention L-STAR at the callback?
Not if you don’t want to. Just go to your callback well rested and relaxed after spending the night with family or friends. Submit your L-STAR form when you submit all your other travel receipts.
Does using L-STAR have a negative impact on my interview or prospects?
Not at all! L-STAR has no effect on your interview or chance at landing the job. Many firms participate at multiple schools, which increases the opportunities for firms to support public interest law opportunities. Firms that don’t participate just let NDLS know that they can’t make the commitment at this time.
As a matter of fact, most hiring committees don’t know (or care) about your travel arrangements. Most students submit their travel receipts after they’ve returned home, and that paperwork is usually submitted to a recruiting coordinator or another administrator.
After I return from my callback, how do I complete the L-STAR process?
Fill out the two-part L-STAR form, return one part to the employer with your expense log and return the other part to the Career Services Office.
If I participate in L-STAR, do I have to forego hotel arrangements on every trip?
Of course not! You can decide on a trip-by-trip basis. We encourage everyone to donate one night’s stay.
HELP! I already made my arrangements but now I want to use L-STAR.
Unlike nonrefundable airfares, hotel rooms are usually fully refundable until the day of your arrival. If your best friend moves or your parents relocate, just call the travel agent back to see if the hotel arrangement can be cancelled without penalty. Submit the L-STAR form with your receipts and the CSO will follow-up.
What if I want to support summer public interest positions but I don’t have any family or friends in a callback city?
No worries! You can make a donation to Notre Dame Public Interest Law Foundation Summer Fellowship Fund, the PILF Day-of-Pay fundraiser, or any other student organization that provides summer public interest funding.
If I have additional questions about the L-STAR process, whom do I contact?
The Notre Dame Law School Coordinator is the Assistant Director for Public Interest.
