Identifying Potential Employers
Identifying Potential Employers
Martindale-Hubbell Directory:
The Martindale-Hubbell Directory is one of the most comprehensive resources for information on law firms of all sizes and on individual lawyers. Available online, this Directory provides information about the educational backgrounds, professional affiliations, and sometimes practice specialties of individual lawyers at different legal employers. You can perform an advanced search to identify law firms in a particular city by size, practice area, Notre Dame affiliation of attorneys, and more. This is one of the more comprehensive listings of lawyers, law firms and legal employers. However, it does not contain job postings or information on whether a particular employer hires students in the summers. You can also link directly to a firm or legal employer’s website from the Martindale-Hubbell Directory.
NALP Directory:
This large book and website profiles more than 1,500 law firms, large non-profit and governmental organizations. The online version allows for mail merging, searching, and offers other useful tools. This directory is a smaller subset of the employers listed in the Martindale-Hubbell Directory so it should not be considered an inclusive listing of all employers in a particular region.
Chambers Associate:
Chambers Associate is a guide to large law firms. The claim to offer a more realistic “inside view” from the firm’s junior associates to get a real-life perspective on what life is like at the firm. They also offer practice area overviews, alternative career ideas and other useful resources.
Job Postings on Symplicity:
Employers that are not participating in On-Campus Interviews or the Off-Campus Interview Programs often solicit resumes from NDLS students for summer and post-graduate positions throughout the year by contacting the CDO directly. These job postings can be accessed through Symplicity and will include instructions on how to submit applications.
On-Campus Interviews (OCIs):
Each year, the CDO sponsors an on-campus recruitment program for 2L and 3L students (1L students may also participate during the Spring). Law firms, government agencies, and public interest employers come from all parts of the country to interview students for summer and permanent employment. The 2013 Fall OCI program will begin on August 19th and run through November 22nd. See the Resource Center for further details regarding this year’s Fall OCI program.
While NDLS offers a robust OCI program, we strongly encourage you to not rely solely on OCIs, but utilize all the job search resources at your disposal in order to maximize your career opportunities.
Off-Campus Interview Programs (OCIPs):
In addition to OCIs, each year the CDO coordinates OCIPs in New York City, Washington DC and Los Angeles. Through the OCIPs, 2L and 3L students have the opportunity to interview with local employers that are not able to come to campus to participate in the Fall OCI program. This year the OCIPs will be held during the week of August 5th. See the Resource Center for further details regarding this year’s OCIPs.
