Employment

As a student at Notre Dame Law School, we encourage you to make your studies and extracurricular endeavors your foremost priority. However, students do have opportunities to work part-time to supplement some law-school expenses. The American Bar Association standard 304(f) which restricted full-time students' employment to 20 hours per week was eliminated in 2014. However, Notre Dame Law School recommends that students not work more than 20 hours per week while in law school. Those students interested in working will find a number of opportunities on campus, as well as with employers around South Bend.

On-Campus Employment

Assistant Rector Positions (open to 2L and 3L students)

An Assistant Rector is a head staff member who helps in the general administration of one of the University of Notre Dame’s undergraduate residence halls. ARs live in the residence halls, serving as mentors and friends while also supporting and enforcing University policies. Although specific responsibilities vary between residence halls, ARs attend weekly staff meetings, are on duty three to four nights per week, attend hall events, work with the hall government, and plan six hall programs per year. Many ARs on campus are law students.

ARs contract for each semester with a starting salary of approximately $7,000. During their appointment, ARs enjoy a furnished room and meal plan. ARs also receive a tuition-assistance benefit for three credit hours per semester. Students may serve as ARs beginning in their second law school year. For additional information, please visit the AR Application Page. The Office of Housing typically opens the application in early-December.

Research Assistant positions

Approximately 20 to 40 law students serve as research assistants for our faculty each year. These positions are during the academic year or summer. Faculty members advertise these positions via e-mail.
