We strongly discourage you from working during your first year. If you wish to work on a minimal basis, you should consult with the Assistant Dean for Students prior to making this decision. During your second and third year, you may work up to 20 hours per week, though most students decide to focus their attention on their studies and involvement in co-curricular and extracurricular endeavors.
As an upper-level law student working to defray the costs of law school, you will find a number of opportunities available on campus, as well as with employers in South Bend and surrounding communities.
On-campus employment recently held by students and recent grads includes:
Witnesses for Trial Advocacy – Job Opportunities
Assistant Rector Positions: Assistant rectors contract for a full-time academic year appointment, i.e. nine months. The starting salary for assistant rectors is approximately $7,000 per semester. In addition, assistant rectors enjoy a furnished room and a University meal plan during their academic year appointment. Ninety-percent of the Assistant Rectors on campus are law students. For more information about how to apply for these positions, refer to http://osa.nd.edu/hall-staff-opportunities/.
Graduate and Teaching Assistant positions: Several law students serve as Graduate or Teaching Assistants during their 2L and 3L years. Assistantships allow you to devote your full attention to studying, teaching, and/or laboratory work while earning a stipend that covers your cost of living and some educational expenses. Notre Dame has set a work-week limit of 17.5 hours for teaching assistants. On average, Notre Dame students work about 15 hours a week. This stipend is taxable income (federal, state and county); there is no Federal Income Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) withholding for students.
Research Assistant positions: Each year, some 20-30 law students serve as research assistants for members of the Law School faculty. These positions may be held during the academic year or during the summer. Faculty members advertise these positions via email. Typical pay is $10 per hour.
